About Hex Chain

Hex Chain transforms the match-and-clear puzzle formula by placing it on a hexagonal grid, where each cell has six neighbors instead of four. Connect adjacent hexagons of the same color to form chains, and longer chains clear more cells and score more points. The hex grid creates new geometric possibilities — you can chain in six directions, forming branching paths impossible on a square grid. Power hexes appear periodically: flame hexes clear a ring, freeze hexes pause the clock, and rainbow hexes wildcard into any color. The board constantly shifts as new hexes push in from the edges. Strategic planning and spatial awareness on the hex grid separate beginners from experts.

How to Play

Tips & Strategies

The hexagonal grid lets you chain in six directions — exploit diagonal connections that you'd miss on a square grid. Longer chains are exponentially more valuable, so spend a moment scanning before committing. Use flame hexes when surrounded by a single color to maximize their ring-clear effect. Freeze hexes are best saved for moments when the board is pushing dangerously close to overflow. Build chains from the edges inward to prevent orphaned hexes in corners. When the board looks sparse, focus on clearing the most common color to create space for new, potentially matchable hexes.

The History Behind Hex Chain

Hex Chain builds on the match-puzzle tradition but leverages hexagonal geometry for richer gameplay. Hex grids have been used in strategy games since the 1960s (hex wargames) but only recently entered the puzzle space. Games like Hexic (2003, designed by Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov) proved that hexagons create more interesting puzzle dynamics than squares. The six-neighbor adjacency means more possible connections, more chain paths, and more strategic depth per move. Hex Chain's neon aesthetic and fast-paced chain mechanics create a visually hypnotic puzzle experience that stands apart from traditional match-3 games.
